Depression is one of the terms that you would see come around often on social media but you will hardly see anyone coming out with his mental health problems in real life. In a country like India, depression is barely considered an issue. People believe that you need to be strong enough to face the struggles in your life and stop being a crybaby who is venting out his issues. This is where the real problem begins. It might barely be an issue for the person who is not actually facing the same sort of emotions. The one who is actually facing it is the only person who can judge the weight of troubles on his shoulder and it can prove to be more painful than any other physical pain you are ever going to suffer. Clinical depression happens to be one of the more severe forms of depression. For example, there are 3 stages in cancer and the 3rd stage is considered the impossible one to crack as the chances of survival become inevitable. Clinical depression happens to be just like the 3rd phase of cancer where nothing but negative thoughts invade your mind and take over your entire soul. Do you want to know how does it feel like being clinically depressed? Here are some of the points you need to check out:-
Losing energy
You lose a hell lot of energy when you are clinically depressed. You will wake up in the morning only to see those negative thoughts impacting your mind. If you are looking to crack JEE or NEET, all you would think is how embarrassing it would be to work so hard for the exam and still not coming out with good marks. You wouldn't think about the positive side of giving the exams and all you will tout yourself as is a failure. This is a huge, huge problem because if you had the energy in your body, you could channelise your negative thinking into positive thinking within no time. A normal person would just move on in his life and look for better outcomes to occur in the future. In clinical depression, you are too tired to really blend your thoughts and this is a reason why you fail to walk out of the zone where you're completely lifeless.
Blaming oneself
"I didn't clear the exam, I am dumb", "She said she hates me, maybe cause I am a** of a person", "I don't have any friends, maybe I am not a good human being". This is what clinical depression does to you. You start doubting your own self. You start behaving like you are a complete failure even if you are not. This is something that is really vicious at every level possible. Once you start blaming yourself, there's no turning back for you. You keep on demoralising your own personality and in such a situation there are only a few people that can help you out. It can be a psychologist or your own family members who know you better than anyone else. It is important to seek help immediately otherwise your own thoughts will eat you alive.
Indisciplined sleeping
Some people argue that clinical depression leads to loss of sleep as you can barely find sleep. In some of the cases, however, a person goes on to sleep way too much as well. It is referred to as hypersomnia where your loss of energy has to be taken into the account as well. There is a particular amount of time that you should sleep within a day. You need to sleep in a range of 7 to 8 hours per day. There's no doubt in the fact that barely anyone has a disciplined sleeping schedule these days. It is also true that most of the people are not facing any mental health problems even tho they have a really bad sleeping schedule. But a routine of indisciplined sleeping can prove to be harmful in the long run. A clinically depressed person has a really bad sleeping schedule as he can himself point out at it but there's nothing he can do about it which remains the biggest concern of them all.
Loss of concentration
You might be in the most crowded area of the entire world but all you can think of is how terrible you are and how fu**ed up your life is, that's what clinical depression does to you. You cannot focus on your job, you cannot focus on your family, you cannot focus on your friends, in short, you are off the track completely. This is a situation where only a psychologist can help you out who is an expert in the same field. Your family members and your friends can provide you with the support but they cannot help you bail out from the situation completely. In the end, it is going to be you and you only who will have to dust himself off and wake up to find yourself looking for a better tomorrow instead of ending it all today. But one thing that you surely need to understand is that it is just a phase, everything will get better after a certain point and you will find life beautiful all over again.
Loss/Gain of weight
Just like sleeping schedule, you can also see gain as well loss in weight in case of clinical depression. You start gaining a lot of weight after you start taking medications but it can happen before you start to treat your mental illness as well. Some people do not want to eat at all when they are depressed and some people are hungry all the time. From another person's perspective, you will never be able to judge what one is going through. The gain in weight is usually considered a good sign and in some cases, loss of weight is considered being a step towards a healthy lifestyle. There is not a great difference in weight that can be pointed out easily. You will barely lose half a dozen pounds which can happen normally as well. So it is very difficult to gather if someone is depressed or not just from the loss or gain in someone's weight.
Clinical depression has to be taken more seriously than it is right now. Someone like Sushant Singh Rajput had all the fans in the world to seek help from but he chose to stay quiet and left all of us in shock. Now think about those people who barely have got friends, who have hardly achieved anything in their lives, who desperately seek attention but get none of it and they happen to be clinically depressed too. We need to normalize it for them and we need to stop using depression for no real reason as well, it demeans the term completely. Quoting the great Stephen Fury, "It's hard to be friends with someone who's depressed, But is the kindest, noblest, and best things you will ever do.".

DeleteI love that you talked about this because I don't think people realize just how serious clinical depression is and that it is an illness. People clinically depressed tend to be looked at as lazy or weepy and they can't even understand the profound pain you feel and like you're a burden to everyone in your life. Educating people is so important!
