Dil Bechara review: An emotional rollercoaster ride with a sorrowful climax

Dil Bechara stars Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi

So the much-awaited Dil Bechara finally saw a release as it was directly out on OTT platform at Hotstar. Most of the people were and still are very much in confusion about whether to go for the film or save themselves from becoming an emotional mess. To those of them who don't know yet, this is a remake of Fault in Our Stars which itself was based on the book of the same name. The untimely and shocking demise of Sushant Singh Rajput itself makes it a very difficult film to watch and the story was like the final nail in the coffin. I went for the film without giving it a second thought and in terms of review, here are a few points that I have gathered in order to give you an unbiased opinion about the film and whether to go for it or not:-

The Bad

To be honest, there aren't really too many bads in this film so there would be no proper points in subheadings in case of the limitations of the project. I did have a few problems with the editing of it in the second half. There's a big revelation which should have sulked into the narrative pretty nicely as it was the major turning point. They rushed it which was possibly the biggest and only drawback that I can point out. Usually, Hindi films are run for 10-15 extra minutes but in this case, they fell at least 5-10 minutes short of the runtime which was best suited for Dil Bechara.

The Goods

Direction and Screenplay

The first thing which needs to be pointed out at in the Dil Bechara review is how well it has been directed. Mukesh Chhabra is a well-known casting director who interestingly gave Sushant his first break in the industry too. People were a bit concerned if he would be as good a director as he is a casting director but boy o boy, he just nailed it out of the park. Sure the film was a remake of an already celebrated extravaganza but the desi flavour that he gave Dil Bechara was really good to see.
At no point does it bore you or make you feel uninterested. It keeps you hooked to the narrative and even though you have the luxury of moving fast forward on OTT platform if you don't feel like staying with the dull moments of any film, you are not really required to go for it here. Even if Sushant Singh Rajput was alive, this project would have still been praised the same way because it has been directed so maturely by Mukesh Chhabra. He deserves credit for making such an awesome product in his first outing itself!

Music

The legendary AR Rahman was sitting on the music director chair, what else do you expect? We always give a lot of credits to AR Rahman but the words happen to fall short for the way he puts out some of these albums that he produces. The funny thing is that he is basically a Tamil music director but his best work has always come in Hindi cinema and it continues to be the case.

Background music and songs both were damn perfect and lifted Dil Bechara up in terms of anticipation. The songs have been really well used in the film and make the emotions run really fast throughout your body. I will continue to hear these amazing songs out for the time to come, thank you so much, music maestro!

Chemistry

When we are talking about chemistry, it doesn't just mean the way the pair has been presented but the way all the characters of the film are interlinked with each other. Kizie (played by Sanjana) has amazing chemistry with her father and mother (played by Saswata Chatterjee and Swastika Mukherjee respectively) as well as Manny's best friend (played by Sahil Vaid) and the same is the case with Manny (played by Sushant Singh Rajput) and other characters.

It makes all the sequences that damn special and realistic as you are keen to know how they behave with each other. The credit has to be given to the story as well as Mukesh Chhabra who did not let the strong premise to face some sort of distraction.

Performances

Each and every performance is heartfelt and genuine. There is a special appearance by Saif Ali Khan which was always on the cards as he was announced as the supporting character in Dil Bechara and even in a couple of minutes, he left a very strong impact. Saswata Chatterjee and Swastika Mukherjee were both really amazing in their roles as the father and mother of Kizie, they deserve more work like this in the future. Sahil Vaid as Manny's best friend makes a strong impact himself, he should appear often in the films too.

It was the first time Sanjana Sanghi featured in the lead role of a movie and she is simply brilliant in her part. She matches up to all the other artists in the film and there is never a moment where she skips a beat. I know for a fact that this film is going to be all about SSR but credits need to be given to Sanjana too and I hope she doesn't lose her path as an actor in the near future and puts on commendable performances just like this one.

Sushant Singh Rajput

His entry scene will make you scream in joy and blow whistles for him. Fast forward to the climax of Dil Bechara and you will be gutted, disheartened, distraught and what not. It was a boy next door sort of role and Sushant was effortless throughout the part. He happens to be the funniest part of the movie too who makes you laugh really hard and at the end of it, he is going to make you cry too. Imagine watching a guy who took his real-life, lose himself in reel life, isn't the image itself playing with your emotions? I could not help but wonder why he had to commit suicide, he was such a talented actor.

When it all ended, I had a flashback of everything I have seen of him. From his start as a TV actor and then an outstanding debut in the big leagues in the form of Kai Po Che to all the experiments he did as an actor to finally quitting his life. But even in this 34 years of life, 14 years of an acting career and 8 years of Bollywood career, he has inspired so many of them around. He will forever be remembered as a guy who worked incredibly hard to get money, fame and recognition in his life. He got each one of them in plenty but there was just something else that he wanted which he could not get, in turns, he could not bear the disappointment anymore.

We should not remember him for the suicide that he committed but the incredible work that he put. His impressive start as Manav Deshmukh to become a household name, moving on as Ishaan Bhat who was a happy-go-lucky person, playing detective Byomkesh Bakshi in his most cminally underrated performance ever, finally getting his name in the big leagues as MS Dhoni, portraying characters like Mansoor, Lakhan, Anni, each one of which was impressive to a really charming and emotional portrayal in this film, it all puts him in the list of actors that will never be forgotten. You will be sincerely missed Such!

  8. There is no fault in our stars.... Just faults in our system!

I don't have words to describe this movie. I never cried so much in any other film. It left me numb and speechless.

Just one regret.... It ended with a sad note... Just like his life!

He is gone... Not because he failed to impress some idiots... But because this world didn't deserve him!

I've read some pages of The fault in our stars... Romcom was never my thing... So after reading some cringy lines, I abandoned the book... Didn't watch the movie either...
Clearly I am not the perfect audience for this movie also.
But after MSD , I liked Sushant, Not bigggg fan though... So maybe after some years, if I live, I'll watch the movie...
    Again, Nice work, Sharma ji..
