How should the trailer of a film look like?

Film trailer

When we talk about films and how they are perceived in this day and age, we know for a fact that the audience has become much more mature. You cannot fool the fans by making atrocious product and claim it to be something really quality and special. This is why a film trailer contains so much importance in today's time. So the question is, how should the trailer for a film look like? Let's look at some of the points in order to understand it in detail.

Nature of the film

First things first, the trailer needs to suit the nature of the film. By nature what I am trying to convey is the genre of the film. A psychological thriller wouldn't have the same sort of trailer as a romantic comedy. In the same way, a sci-fi movie will have a lot different trailer than that of an action drama. If you mismatch the entire thing, the audience will find it hard to connect to the essence of the movie which is something the people associated with the project would never want.

To explain it further, a film trailer for a sci-fi project should usually be slow so that people can understand it all at once. Meanwhile, in case of a psychological thriller, it should be totally mind-numbing which makes the viewers reflect upon the same time and again. While a romantic comedy needs to feature the best of the music and humour portion of the film in order to make a good trailer. All these things should be kept in mind while making way for a film trailer.

           Content

What's content in its actual and truest sense when we talk about it in reference to the entertainment industry? It's something which is refreshing, not absurd and helps nourishing the intellects of a person. Now a film trailer for a content-driven project needs to have layers to it. You cannot present people with a trailer which doesn't reflect on the story well. The main objective of the movie needs to be conveyed in a very layered sense. While in case of films that have little to do with innovation and more to do with the commercial aspect of things, you need to cut a basic trailer which doesn't tell the entire story in its runtime itself.

There are films made for people who are movie buffs and they need new stories and new concepts every now and then meanwhile there are projects which are made solely to entertain families who are not really that deep into movies but they like enjoying their time on the weekends and a no brainer film is where they get to relax. There's nothing wrong in making films for different kinds of audiences but the film trailer for the projects would vary too in such a case.

        Highlight point

You cannot miss out on giving out bits of the best part of the project in a film trailer. That's how you get the audience under your pulse. For example, the dialogues of the much talked about "Joker" from 2019 were insanely good. So they used the best of the bunch in the teaser trailer itself just to get the people hyped and eventually, they were successful at their job.

In some cases, the trailer cut can completely avoid the best part of the film too. Most of the highlight points of a movie need to be completely ignored while making the trailer for it so that fans feel fresh when they check out those scenes and do not get worn out during the same.

      Background music

Film trailer

The use of bgm in a film trailer is so so very important. No matter how good your film is, no matter how amazing the trailer has been cut otherwise if the background music is not spot on, the audience will not get indulged into it and that defeats the basic idea of having a film trailer.

This is something the South Indian industry has mastered over the years. The actors are treated like demi-gods over there and the hype surrounding their films is enormous. The biggest credit for that needs to be given to the teaser/trailer cut of the projects out there that go huge and no matter what the word of mouth is, the first-day box office collections are always record-breaking.

          Conclusion

When you look into the grand scheme of things, you know how much weight a good trailer cut carries for the film. More often than not, people take the idea of a project by the trailer itself and they decide whether the movie is going to be worth it or not. Some producers tend to keep the trailer short so that people don't feel it is too big and tend demand for more. Most of the trailers have runtime in the range of 2 to 3 minutes which is best suited in almost all the cases.

What do you think? Is there any other aspect which needs to be looked upon in case of a film trailer? Let me know in the comments below!

  5. I kinda disagree about the highlight point part tbh. Yeah should include key moments but sometimes what they do is put all the key moments Thats bad . We dont want all the same best scenes in the movie itself .

    1. I don't say put them all out there but you need to reflect upon the best part of the film in the trailer itself, in some capacity!
